Side of square = l

then, area of square = l^2

if,

side of square = l/2

then, area of square = (l/2)^2

= l^2/4

= 1/4(l^2)

= 1/4 of area of square.

I.E, If the side of square is halved then it's area becomes 1/4 of its original area.
