Brindabani Sarang is a Kafi thaat raga. It was created by Swami Haridas. He brought Lord Krishna to earth by singing this raga who took the form of an idol which can still be seen in Mathura. The notes Ga and dha are not used in this raga. Its origin from thaat Kaafi is peculiar as it uses the shuddha form of "ni" in its Aaroha, whereas the komala form of "ni" and "ga" is the main characteristic of the Kaafi thaat. So it is possible to make a mistake in identifying its thaat as Khamaj.

This raga evokes the sringara rasa - romantic love.[1]

Arohana & Avarohana

Arohana: Sa Re Ma Pa Ni Sa

Avarohana: Sa ni(komal) Pa Ma Re Sa.

Ni swara is Shuddha in Arohana and Komal in Avarohana.

Madhumad Sarang where shuddha ni is dropped. It is still considered a chanchal raga. Please note that Megh malhar has same notes but it is dhrupad anga raga and is serious in rendering with a lot of meend.

Character Sketch of Hasan

Hasan was the Serang (an Asian head of lascar crew) of the ship Ranaganji which was sailing from Liverpool to India. He was a squat, very ugly native seaman, with short legs and large disproportionate head.

He was a Muslim by Religion. He was born in Punjab from where his family moved to south.

He liked a seafaring life and spent forty years in various ships. It was his fifteenth year in Ranaganji.

The captain of the ship Mr. Hamble gave just Hasan as the assistant when the young and inexperienced doctor reported an outbreak of smallpox on board. The captain was confident of Hasan. He nursed the patients with dedication and was unmindful of the danger to himself. It was his calm and unperturbed nature that gave the doctor fresh heart. When a patient died he would recite words from Ramayana, sewed their shrouds and would give them a watery burial.

On shore he had no home, no family or friends. All his possessions contained in his chest might worth a few rupees.

He had no fondness for speech. He was unmistakably sincere, completely detached from the usual hope of reward. Money had no interest in him. He had courage, self-control and faith.
