➡Plants are classified in many different ways. The Family, Genus, and species of the plant are the ones which are used commonly for studying a plant or for using its products. Sometimes, the subspecies, cultivar or variety is also considered.
Plants are classified based on:
1. Class – Angiosperms and gymnosperms
2. Subclass - Monocotyledonae and Dicotyledonae
3. Superorder – group related to plant families. Names end with –idae.
4. Order – names end with –ales.
5. Family – each order is divided into families. Names end in –aceae.
6. Subfamily – family is divided into sub-families. Names end with – oideae.
7. Tribe - Names end with –eae.
8. Subtribe - Names end with –inae.
9. Genus – most familiar name of the plant. Almost common to the same group.
10. Species – this level defines the individual plants. It is written after the Genus.
11. Variety – a plant that is slightly different from the species.
12. Form – a plant within species with small botanical differences.
13. Cultivar – a cultivated variety of a particular plant.
