Ans. A date is a fruit. They are oval - cylindrical , 3-7 cm. long and 2-3 cm. in diameter and when ripe, range from bright - red to bright - yellow in colour, depending on variety.

Q. How many type of groups of date exist ?

Ans. Three main cultivar groups of date exist --

  • Soft
  • Semi - dry
  • Dry.

These depend on glucose, fructose and sucrose.

Q. What are the uses of other parts of date tree ?

Ans. They can be used as :

  • Fruitclusters -- The stripped fruitclusters are used as brooms.
  • Leaves -- In North-Africa these are used for making huts. The leaves which are mature are are used to make mats, screens, baskets and fans.
  • Seeds -- The finely - grouped seeds are mixed with flour to make breed.
