1. World Population Day (WPD), established by the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, falls on 11 July every year and seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.
2. World Population Day was established in 1989 by the UN in the wake of the world’s population reaching 5 billion people. The purpose of this day is to bring attention to the health, development, and environmental impacts of rapid population growth.
3. The Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended its introduction in 1989. Inspiration for this special day comes from the interest that was raised by “Five Billion Day” on 11th July, 1987. This was the day when the world’s population reached 5 billion.
