Well I believe that you are clear about the meaning and comcept of the term wet bulb temperature. So lets move on to the reason behind defining such temperature for a moist air.

There are many answers for the question but one i found to be very convenient is that in psychrometry for defining the state of the system three independent properties are required( according to gibs phase rule).Among the three one is barometric pressure which is fixed by atmosphere. One of the other two is dry bulb temperature because it is very easy to measure dry bulb temperature using ordinary thermometer. Now the third one may be any property like relative humidity or humidity ratio. But they are very difficult to measure with appropriate accuracy. Temperatures are the only property that can be measured easily with higher accuracy so it will be good to have third property in terms of temperature. Due point is also can be measured but it is also a difficult task.

So another temperature called wet bulb temperature is defined which is easy to measure and the state of air can be easily stated on chart.

HI

HERES YOUR ANSWER

  • The humidity of the atmosphere is measured with the help of a Hygrometer, also known as Dry and Wet Bulb Thermometer.
  • In the Dry and Wet Bulb Thermometer, a piece of wet cloth is tied around one bulb, the other end of the cloth dips into a small container of water.
  • The rate of evaporation of water vapour from the wet bulb keeps the temperature of this Bulb lower than the Dry bulb.
  • A difference in temperature between the two thermometers indicates the relative humidity.
  • Saturated air will not allow evaporation and in case the temperature reading both the Dry and Wet thermometers will be same. This would mean that the relative humidity is 100%.
