Private Quelch was a trainee. He had a good knowledge in military
affairs. He aimed to become commission, but first a stripe. He would always
show off his knowledge. A nickname was given to him and that was Professor. Anybody who has doubt in a subject would lose it
after a talk with Quelch. One
day in musketry, when Sergeant was taking lesson about rifle, he
mentioned round off value 2000 feet per second. Professor interrupted
and corrected as 2440 per second. Sergeant was irritated on this and would ask
questions at end of sessions to seek revenge but every time Quelch will
answer. He will get co-trainees manuals and stay-up late at nights and read. He will not allow any other co-trainee to
get appreciation. If his co-trainee made a mistake, before trainer could
correct Quelch will correct. It irritated all. Corporal Turnbull was his
turning point. He was a tough and strong man back from Dunkirk. He was
teaching about grenade. Professor interrupted here also. To avoid
further insult, Corporal told Professor to continue lecture. At the end
of session, he said the cookhouse wanted a person for work and that he has
selected Private Quelch. It was a great punishment for him. When author with his friend went to canteen
and returned, they heard a familiar voice. It was professor. He was
complaining the way potatoes were peeled in cookhouse and showing his
knowledge off. He still didn't learn a lesson.
