¤¤ Also called PORIFERA .
¤¤ Are usually marine and asymmetrical .
¤¤ They have level of organisation and diploblastic animals.
¤¤ Food Gathering, respiratory exchange and removal of wastes occurs through water canal system . Digestion intracellular.
¤¤ Ostia ( minutes pore on the body) , spongocoel (body cavity ) and osculum in water transport.
¤¤ They are lined by choanocytes (collar cells).
¤¤ Body wall has skeleton of spicules or spongin fibres.
¤¤ Animals are hermophrodite. Fertilisation internal.
¤¤ Indirect development [ i.e., has a larval stage distinct from adult stage].

Sponges are similar to other animals in that they are multicellular, heterotrophic, lack cell walls and produce sperm cells. Unlike other animals, they lack true tissues and organs. Some of them are radially symmetrical, but most are asymmetrical.
