Uses:

Uses of sodium hydroxide (NaOH):

(1) It is used in the manufacturing of paper.

(2) It is used for making soaps and detergents.

Uses of chlorine:

(1) Chlorine kills bacteria – it is a disinfectant. It is used to treat drinking water and swimming pool water.

(2) It is also used to make hundreds of consumer products from paper to paints, and from textiles to insecticides. (3) Chlorine gas is itself very poisonous, and was used as a chemical weapon during the First World War.

Uses of Hydrogen:

(1)Commercial fixation of nitrogen from the air in the Haber ammonia process.

(2) hydrogenation of fats and oils.

(3) Methanol production, in hydrodealkylation, hydrocracking, and hydrodesulphurization.
