Wildlife refers to all those animals that have not been tamed or domesticated by humans. Wildlife is also called fauna. India has a rich and varied fauna. India is home about 75,000 animal species. These include a wide variety of mammals, reptiles amphibians,birds,fishes, insects , etc.
The only place on Earth where Asiatic lion is found is the Gir National Park of Gujarat, India. In India elephants are found in the forests of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Camels , most of which have now been domesticated, are found mainly in Thar desert of Rajasthan. Wild asses are found in the marshy Rann of Kutchch of Gujarat. Tigers are mainly found in the wildlife reserves created by the government to protect them like- The Ranthambore National park of Rajasthan and Kanha National park of Madhya Pradesh. One - horned Rhinoceros are found in The Kaziranga National Park and the swampy regions of Assam . Wild goats (like the ibex), yak, snow leopards and Chiru are found in the Leh and Ladakh regions of Jammu and Kashmir in the Himalayas. The sloth bear is found all over Peninsular India . Brown bears and black bears are found in Himalayan ranges.
There are several varieties of snakes found in India. They are huge pythons, poisonous vipers, cobra and kraits to small water snakes. There are different types of crocodiles like gharial, saltwater crocodile and mugger found in the rivers of India.
India is rich in bird life. The peacock is the national bird of our country. Other colorful feathered species found in India include ducks, mynahs, pigeons, geese, hornbills, bulbuls, cranes, herons, cuckoos, etc. Two bird sanctuaries in India are Bharatpur bird sanctuary and Vedanthangal bird sanctuary.
