Newton first law of motion was also known as inertia. It was an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted upon my unbalanced force.
For eg. My ball is kept on table. I want to pick it up. The earth is pulling the ball downwards towards itself and the ball is also applying equal force to balance it. Then I would also have to apply force to pick the ball. Fortunately my muscles are strong enough to pick it.
