The notation for the subshells of M Shells can be written according to the rule as:-

  • The Shells of an electron can be notated by using K, L, M, N, O, P or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
  • Also, as we move away from the nucleus, these numbers also indicate the number of subshells present.
  • So, for the M Shell the number represents 3, which means there are three subshells in M Shell, each with quantum number 3.
  • Notation for the subshells of M Shell includes 3s, 3p and 3d subshells having 1, 3, and 5 orbitals respectively present in them.
  • The maximum number of electrons present in these subshells = 2* no. of orbitals. i.e. 3s has 2 electrons, 3p has 6 electrons and 3d has 10 electrons in them.

Hence, the notation for subshells of M Shells are 3s, 3p and 3d.
