Give one ethical reason why a compound of iodine should not be added to sodium chloride used in food.
Answers
Answer:
Iodine or iodate is added to salt as a way of getting it into the diets of people living in landlocked areas that have very low iodine content in the soils. Insufficient iodine can lead to goiter, but there is growing evidence that sub-goiter deficiencies may have subtle effects on intellectual development, similar to exposure to lead paint.
One concern is that while people western countries are getting too much salt in their diet, most of it is coming from processed foods. The manufacturers of these foods do not generally use iodized salt.

Answer:
You need iodine in your diet. Lack of iodine causes problems with your thyroid gland known as goiter. Some people live in places where natural sources of iodine are common. Ocean products like saltwater fish and seaweed contain iodine. People getting their iodine from natural sources don’t need to take iodine supplements. So, iodized salt isn't necessary for them.
However, some places have little or no iodine in the local diet and need to take a supplement. The easiest way to do that is to use iodized salt. Table salt is sodium chloride NaCl. A simple compound very similar to sodium chloride is potassium iodide KI. A little bit of it added to table salt satisfies the need for iodine.
