Pushing a box across the floor is work, so is carrying a box. Holding a heavy box is NOT work because you need to use a force to move an object through a distance. Holding a box does not fulfill the distance requirement.

Walking up stairs or walking downstairs is work because you are moving yourself. Getting out of bed in the morning and walking to the bathroom is work.
