hardrock and soft rock are the terms which are not commonly used in geology as reference ..

as far as hard rock is concerned the rocks with ability to stand abrasion at large scale is categorised under hard rocks .such as

igneous - granite , gabbro, rhyolite , basalt , pegmatite , syenite , diorite , dolerite etc

metamoephic - gniess , schist , amphibolite , quartzite , hornfels etc.

sedimentary -sandstone , conglomerate breccia etc ..

many minerals like garnet , topaz , beryl , aquamarine , corundum , pyrope , almandite , variety of quartz like agate , chalcedony , cat’s eye etc..

are used as gem stome due their hardness ..
