Reducing sugars are the sugars which has free anomeric carbon which can reduce certain reagents and gets oxidised.

All sugars mentioned below are reducing sugars. Reducing sugars have a free carbonyl group either -CHO or -CO group.

Examples of Reducing sugars are: Glucose, Fructose, Mannose, Galactose, Lactose, and Maltose.

Nonreducing sugar A sugar that cannot donate electrons to other molecules and therefore cannot act as a reducing agent. Sucrose is the most common nonreducing sugar.

Other examples are trehalose, raffinose, stachyose and verbascose.
The linkage between the glucose and fructose units in sucrose, which involves aldehyde and ketone groups, is responsible for the inability of sucrose to act as a reducing sugar.
