One correction here-It is distance, not diatance.

An example- When a body travels in a complete circle of circumferance 100m. Here distance covered is 100m but displacement is zero as the body is back where it started

Let initial point be A and final point be B. Let the distance between these two points be 20 km. A person X started walking from point A and reached point B. Then again he started from point B and reached the initial point A ( the point from which he started ). Thus here the total distance covered is 20+20=40 km but displacement is 0 as he is at the point from where he started.( Displacement is the shortest path between initial and final point )
