Imagine you are driving your car. You step on gas and accelerate - you've just changed the velocity (its magnitude).

Assume you are driving at constant speed and turn the wheel - you've just changed the velocity (its direction)

NOTE: Velocity is a vector quantity. Change in velocity means changing the magnitude, direction or both.
