If the force has a component in the direction opposite to the displacement, the force does negative work.
FOR EXAMPLE :
If you pick the book up and place it gently back on the floor again, though, you're doing negative work, because the book is going down but you're exerting an upward force, acting against gravity.

if we work on a vehicle which is moving toward us then the work is negative, because on which object our force is exert is just moving in oppsition .
