Display of the quality of truthfulness  from the lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Lokmanya Tilak

Lokmanya Tilak:

Lokmanya Tilak was born in Ratnagiri of Maharashtra and he did his schooling there. One the class teacher entered the class and saw groundnut shells strewn in the classroom. He became annoyed and took his cane and asked the students who ate groundnuts in the class, no one confessed and the teacher decided to punish the entire class. He began to give each student two slashes with his cane. When Tilak's turn came, he didn’t hold his hand out, instead he said "I didn’t eat groundnuts. So I won’t receive the slash”.

Mahatma Gandhi:

Mahatma Gandhi as a young boy was studying at Katiawar High school and at one instance an educational inspector named Giles, visited the school. He came to Gandhi’s class and asked the students to write the word, “kettle” o their slate. Gandhi did not know to spell the word and he was prompted by his class teacher to copy from the student sitting next to him. But young Gandhi did not oblige his teacher. He did not copy and Mr. Giles appreciated Gandhi for his truthfulness .

Gandhi and Tilak's truthfulness can be gauged by the above instances .
