The major quantities of hydrogen is produced by the steam reforming of methane as it is a economical process. This process involves heating methane at high temperatures in the presence of steam and a nickel catalyst.

Methane molecules react with water and form carbon monoxide and hydrogen which are collectively called as syn gas. The carbon monoxide gas is further passed with steam over iron oxide and water gas shift reaction occur and form more of hydrogen.
