Overpopulation is the reason for small size land holdings in India.

  • The area of land an individual or a family owns is their landholdings.
  • As the population increases, the area of land each individual gets to own decreases.
  • This results in small size landholdings.
  • In India, the majority population owns land inherited from their forefathers.
  • Each generation receives the divided, subdivided, and fragmented piece of land owned by the previous generation.
  • The area of land never increases but the population keeps increasing rapidly.
