If the gas turns lime water milky ,then the gas is CO2
CaOH2+CO2--->CaCO3+H2O
It is a chemical change

Ca(OH)2 +CO2 =CaCO3 (white ppt)+H2O
To check the presence of CO2 pass it through lime solution, if it turns milky then it shows presence of CO2.
Or just direct the gas to a burning candle,if the candle blows off ,
It again shows presence of CO2 as it acts as an extinguisher .
Hope it helped.
