Igneous — they form from the cooling of magma deep inside the earth. They often have large crystals (you can see them with the naked eye). Pumice and basalt are both extrusive igneous rocks. Pumice is used in building work as breeze blocks or lightweight concrete, and pumice was one of the favoured building materials of the Ancient Romans. Today pumice is used in the cosmetic and cleaning industries.

The most common types of igneous rocks are:

andesite

basalt

dacite

dolerite (also called diabase)

gabbro

diorite

peridotite

nepheline

obsidian

scoria

tuff

volcanic bomb

Metamorphic — they are formed through the change (metamorphosis) of igneous and sedimentary rocks. They can form both underground and at the surface. Uses of Metamorphic Rocks. Quartzite and marble are the most commonly used metamorphic rocks. They are frequently chosen for building materials and artwork. Marble is used for statues and decorative items like vases

The most common metamorphic rocks are:

amphibolite

eclogite

gneiss

hornfels

marble

migmatite

phyllite

quartzite

serpentinite

slate

Sedimentary — they are formed through the solidification of sediment. They can be formed from organic remains (such as limestone), or from the cementing of other rock .Oil, natural gas, coal, and uranium, our major energy resources, are formed in and come from sedimentary rocks.

Sand and gravel for construction come from sediment.

Sandstone and limestone are used for building stone.

Rock gypsum is used to make plaster.

Limestone is used to make cement.

Salt is used for flavoring.

Some common sedimentary rocks are:

argillite

breccia

chalk

chert

claystone

coal

conglomerate

dolomite

limestone

gypsum

greywacke

mudstone

shale

siltstone

turbidite
