To form Na_20 compound, 2 sodium ions are needed to neutralize the charge on Oxygen ion. This this will lose two electrons to form Mg^2+ ion. This will gain two electrons to form 0^2- ion. To form MgO compound, one magnesium ion is neede to neutralize the charge on oxygen ion.
