As you know, plants use sunlight for energy. Plants use this energy to synthesize more complex molecules like sugars from basic building blocks like water and carbon dioxide. That added energy from the sun can actually be measured if you have an EXTREMELY sensitive scale because it even adds a bit of mass to the plants, in the form of the chemical bonds that make up these more complex molecules.

From there, it's relatively straightforward. Herbivores eat those plants, and some of those previous complex molecules get broken down or simply passed on by the herbivore's system and used to build and maintain their bodily tissues and activity. Carnivores essentially just do the same thing, the only difference being that they ingest animal cells, including (and especially) herbivores, instead of plant cells.
