The electrophile aromatic substitution of alkyl group in benzene follows Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction.

Here alkyl chloride is added to benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride.

The following steps are followed in the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction in benzene:

  1. The benzene and propyl chloride forms propyl carbocation.
  2. Non aromatic carbocation is formed when carbocation reacts with benzene’s pi-electron system.
  3. The non aromatic carbocation attains aromaticity when it loses a proton.
  4. The isopropyl benzene is formed as the end product of this reaction.
