It is important to encourage people to tell the truth. But how we do this must be practical. A murderer cannot be set free just because he promised to tell the truth to the police or the judge.

When dealing with children, parents assure their children that if they tell the truth they will not be punished. But often parents are not consistent and go ahead with punishing them. Keep your word not to punish them but at the same time teach the children not to repeat the same bad thing.
