oxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids is an important oxidation reaction in organic chemistry.

These reactions in the presence of  Cr2O7(2-)

Reaction as follows

3CH₃-CH₂-OH + 2Cr₂O₇²⁻ + 16H⁺→ 3CH₃COOH + 4Cr³⁺ + 11H₂O

The transformation of alcohol into carboxylic acid

Oxidation:

  • Ketones, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids can be produced by oxidizing alcohol.
  • For example, ketones and aldehydes can be employed in future Grignard reactions, and carboxylic acids can be used for esterification.
  • These functional groups are helpful for other reactions as well. When organic molecules are oxidized, the number of bonds from carbon to oxygen (or another electronegative element, like a halogen)
  • As well as the number of bonds to hydrogen, are often increased.

Chromic acid converts primary alcohols into carboxylic acids and secondary alcohols into ketones by the process of oxidation. Under calm circumstances, tertiary alcohols and chromic acid do not react.
