if area is more pressure will be less and if area is less pressure will be more .and the needle is having less area pressure exerted will be more and can pass easily through the cloth .so it is made sharp at the tip of sewing needle.

The tip or the top of the sewing needle is sharp as the surface area is very less then the force exerted would be a lot more and it will penetrate through the desired material (generally cloth).
