a) a rubber band is solid but when force is applied on the band the deforming force acts and the shape of the band changes because the increase in intra molecular space of the molecules of the band.
b) in case of sponges there are some holes present in the whole body of the sponge. so it creates a passage for air. when we apply force on it the air passes quickly out of the holes and therefore compress .
