When a carpet is beaten with a stick, the dust comes out of it because of law of inertia.
Initially the dust particles are at rest along with the carpet. Beating the carpet with the stick makes the carpet move but the dust particles remain at rest due to inertia of rest, thus the dust gets detached from the carpet.

Answer:
The dust particles that were previously at rest on the carpet remain at rest due to their inertia and hence, get separated from the carpet. This is why when a carpet is beaten with a stick, dust comes out from it. Note: The inertia of a body is dependent on its mass. Greater the mass, greater is its inertia.
