Granaries are large store rooms for storage of food grains like wheat, rice, pulses, millets etc. When there is a good harvest and surplus of such food grains, then the surplus grains are usually stored in granaries, for long term use.

However, granaries have to be maintained in very hygienic conditions so that the grains do not get spoilt. Unhygienic conditions in granaries may attract rodents and other pests which eat and damage the stored grains. Damp and humid conditions may cause mould and fungus to grow inside the granaries, thus making the grains stored within, inedible.

Hence, granaries must be maintained in clean, dry and hygienic conditions.
