(a) Starts are seen higher than they actually are because of Atmospheric refraction due to which the light reaching to our eyes from the stars moves in different direction

(b) The sky appears dark to passengers flying at higher altitude because at higher altitudes there is no presence of atmosphere due to which there is no refraction and hence no light can reach their eyes.
