A stick partly immersed in water appears bent.

It stick partly immersed in water seems to be bent due to refraction.
As it travel from rarer medium to denser medium.

The optical density of water is greater than that of air. The more the optical density the less will be the velocity of light. Hence when light passes from an optically rarer medium to optically denser medium, the light bends towards the normal.This is why the pencil appears to be bent when partly immersed in water.
