Alkali metals being a strong reducing agent because they can easily donate electrons.

Alkali metals being a strong reducing agent because they can easily donate electrons. Thus they cannot be extracted by the reduction of their oxides and chlorides

Carbon cannot reduce the oxides of sodium, magnesium, calcium, aluminium etc. to the respective metals. This is because these metals have more affinity for oxygen than carbon.
