ams are constructed with a broader bottom to withstand the large force of the dam.

it is simple by looking at the formula.



pressure = force/ area

if the bottom is broad, area is more,

hence for the same force, pressure is very less...!!

Bases of dams are made broader so that they exert less atmospheric pressure on the surface and hence do not go down.

This can be clear by looking at the following formula :

PRESSURE = FORCE / AREA

i.e. Area and Pressure are inversely proprtional to each other.

As a result the dams exert less pressure because of broader area and hence do not go down.
