Calcium oxide is basic in nature because it's produces Ca(OH)2 in the aqueous solution of it.

- When we add calcium oxide in the water it dissociates in the water and produces OH- ions.

(Here the production of OH- ions is dependent on the oxygen molecules of the water)

And we know that only basic materials produce OH- ions.

- The OH- ions also produce Ca(OH)2 which is also basic in nature.

And we can also do the litmus test which also confirms it's basic nature.
