The plasma membrane allows or permits the entry and exit of some materials in and out of the cell.It also prevents movement of some other materials. Therefore the cell membrane is called as semi-permeable membrane

Answer

  • The cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane, is semi-permeable in nature.
  • When we say it is semi-permeable we mean to say that it permits the entry and exit of only selected materials in and out of the cell.
  • Substances like oxygen and carbon dioxide are allowed to move in and out of the cell through the process of diffusion.
  • Diffusion is the movement of particles from high concentrated area to a lower concentrated area.
  • So when the carbon dioxide content in the cell becomes more than that of the surroundings, the carbon dioxide moves out of the cell to the surroundings through the process of diffusion.
  • Similarly, when the oxygen content is more outside the cell it enters the cell from the surroundings through the process of diffusion.
