Scales are the exoskeleton located outside a fish body. Scales are hard, transparent and sharp structures which protect fish from predators. ... These are too slippery as the epidermal cells present under the scales secrete mucous which comes out and forms a covering on the scales. Most of the fish have scales.

Fish have scales to protect their otherwise soft bodies. Scales are bony in structure and overlap each other. Scales have some versatility in them and can bend and slide over one another so that the fish can move.
