Bryophytes are small multicellular plants lacking real roots, leaves and stems and so they are short.

Though these plants live in the soil, they need water for the sexual reproduction.

Bryophytes are also known as the Amphibians of the plant kingdom since the sperm of Bryophytes, antherozoids need water to swim and fertilize the egg and reproduce into new plants. But these plants are terrestrial.

Examples are Liverworts (Riccia), Mosses (Funaria).
