In the laboratory, hydrogen gas is made from the reaction of a metal with hydrochloric acid which liberates hydrogen gas. The metal used during the reaction sats in the lab for a certain period of time.

During this time period, the metal for example magnesium reacts with different gases which are present in trace amounts into the atmosphere.

Magnesium reacts with trace gases such as hydrogen sulfide and forms MgS which further reacts with the hydrogen gas to form H2S which has a fishy rotten smell.

That is why when hydrogen is produced on a commercial scale it has a fishy smell.
