An insulating material is a material that reduces or prevents the flow of electricity. There are 3 main factors due to which copper is covered with an insulating material:
1. Resistance to Corrosion:
Insulated wire is more resistant to corrosion then simple copper wire.
2. Avoiding Electrical Shorts:
Since copper is a good conductor of heat and electricity, hence uninsulated copper wire is more prone to electrical shorts.
3. Resistance to Interference:
Interference can effect the level of electricity conducted by the wire. The insulating material protects copper from outside elements and maintains optimum level of conductivity.

When it comes to electricity, there are two kinds of materials:
1.Conductors
2. Insulators
Conductors are the materials that allow electricity to pass through them.
Insulators do not allow the electric ity to pass through them.
Usually copper wires/ rods are covered with insulating material like plastic for the following reasons:
------////--------///-------------///----------
1. Insulating material prevents people from electrical shocks.

2. Electrons flowing through copper wire will not flow into our body when we touch the copper wire.

3. Insulating material prevents the wire from getting heated and causing fire accidents.

4. It has a capacity to dissipate heat energy.
