Answer:

diamond and graphite both are Allotropes of carbon

but they have different arrangements of carbon in them

  1. why diamond is bad conductor of electricity - In diamond on carbon atom is connected to four other carbon atoms and we know that valency of carbon is 4 so as one carbon atom is connected to four other carbon atoms by strong covalent bond all the outermost electrons are used in the bond formation. So due to the absence of electrons (charge) diamond doesn't conduct electricity.
  2. why graphite is good conductor of electricity- In graphite one carbon atom is connected with three other carbon atoms by the means of strong covalent bonds and we know that valency of carbon is 4 . So as one carbon atom is connected to three other carbon atoms in graphite by covalent bonds. Only three electrons are used up in bond formation. One electron in each carbon atom i graphite is free . Thus due to the presence of free electrons ( charge) in graphite. Graphite conducts electricity.
  3. Thus this is the reason why graphite is good conductor of electricity and diamond is bad conductor of electricity.
