Dams are mostly constructed due to multipurpose projects. They serve various uses for the people in India.

India's first Prime minister. Jawaharlal Nehru proclaimed Dams as the temples of modern India. The reasons are:

1. They created large storehouse of Rainwater

2. They created generation of hydro power on large scale

3. They promoted spawning of fishes

4. They controlled flood.

5. They created small employment opportunities like Fishing

6. They supplied water to various villages with scarcity of water through canals
