In order to equalise the time gap of 2 hours between India's easternmost and westernmost extent and to eradicate all kinds of confusion that may arise by following different timings within a country, we follow the local time of India Central Meridian which passes from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh at 82°30' E longitude as Indian Standard Meridian.
Hope it helps you..

It is because
It passes through the centre of India near Mirzapur(UP) and has brought harmony in time across the country. Moreover it is divisible by 7 and half degree. Therefore in order to follow same timings 82degree30E has been selected as the prime meridian of India
