nature is the best packer of any thing in the world. every molecule has inter molecular attractions and repulsions, so if the attractions are very high it exists as solids, if they are less exists as liquids, even less they exists as gases entropy mean the order of randomness, it also plays a major role for solids entropy is very less, liquids high and for gases very high

The reason for the existence of the 3 states of matter is the different amount of attraction between their particles. Solids have the maximum attraction between their particles(this is also the reason why they have a definite shape). The forces of attraction between the particles of liquid is stronger than gases but weaker than those of solids(this is the reason why liquids have no particular shape but still their particles stay together). Gases have the weakest forces of attraction between their particles, hence its particles float freely!
