The bonds formed by carbon atoms are strong and so stable. This is because of two reasons:

1. Carbon forms compounds by sharing electrons. So there are no free electrons in the compound. Thus, they are covalent compounds( do not carry any charge) and do not usually react. So, they are stable.

2. A carbon atom has a very small size due to which the nucleus holds the shared pair of electrons strongly. This makes the bonds strong and thus stable.
