in this process molecules are moved against a concentration gradient (from lower to higher concentration) and requires energy and a partially permeable membrane

so mineral ions do not pass

as for water movement it occurs due to osmosis....

osmosis is defined as the movement of water down the water potential gradient through a partially permeable membrane.....

so water moves in the root
