Give reason for the following
1. We cannot get a single magnetic pole in a magnet
2. A freely suspended Magnet directs itself along North-South direction
3. If you break a magnet into two pieces you get too smaller but complete magnets
4. The attraction of iron fillings by poles in maximum
5. Electromagnet is regarded as temporary Magnet

Answer:

1. Magnetic poles always exist in pairs and cannot: exist independently. If a bar magnet is broken into two or more pieces, each of them will have a north pole and a south pole. Hence. It is impossible to obtain a piece of the magnet with only one magnetic pole.

2. A freely suspended magnet always rests in the north-south direction because the magnetic south pole of the earth lies in the geographic north direction and the magnetic north pole of the earth lies in the geographical south direction.

3. When they have broken their magnet into two pieces they will find that they now have two smaller magnets. They can continue breaking their magnet into smaller and smaller pieces. Each time there is never a single pole in the broken magnet. That is different from the way in which electric charges behave.

4. Maximum iron fillings will stick to the ends of the bar magnet because at the ends of the magnet poles are located. The strength of the poles is maximum at the ends of the magnet. A freely suspended magnet always aligns itself in North-South direction.

5. An electromagnet is called a temporary magnet because it produces magnetic field so long as current flows in its coil.

1. We cannot make a magnet with only one pole. Any magnet has always two poles namely north and south.

2. A freely suspended magnet always rests in the north-south direction because our earth behaves like a huge bar magnet.

3. You can continue breaking your magnet into smaller and smaller pieces. Each time there is never a single pole in the broken magnet. That is different from the way in which electric charges behave. You can separate negative and positive charges by rubbing insulating materials together.

4. Like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other. Maximum iron fillings will stick to the ends of the bar magnet because at the ends of the magnet poles are located. The strength of the poles is maximum at the ends of the magnet.

5. An electromagnet is a temporary magnet. It is made by winding a coil of insulated wire round a soft iron core.

When a current is passed through the coil, the magnetic field produced by the current magnetises the soft iron core. The soft iron core loses all the magnetism when the current is switched off.
